Developmental Editing Practicum (review of your edit)

Cost varies. The practicum is scheduled by arrangement with the instructor.

If you’re launching a developmental editing business and want an experienced developmental editor to review your edits on a manuscript to make sure you’re following best practices before you hang out your shingle, this practicum is intended for you.

If you’re breaking into a new genre or shifting from fiction to nonfiction development (or vice versa) and want to ensure you’re not making any missteps, this practicum can help.

If you’re working on a particularly challenging manuscript and need some help figuring out what’s going wrong and what you should say about it, this practicum will help solve the situation.

There are several ways to take this practicum.

  • Option A. The instructor will review your completed edits on a full manuscript (up to 100,000 words) as well as your revision letter and will provide a feedback letter covering her basic assessment of the manuscript (helps ensure you’ve identified dev problems correctly), what you’re doing well in your edit, and suggestions for more effective approaches (if any). The instructor can typically provide this review within three weeks of receipt of the edited manuscript. This option assumes that you are using a client/colleague/friend’s manuscript. See Option C for an instructor-provided option. $500.

  • Option B. The instructor can help guide your edit in real-time, as you do the edit. This includes weekly check-ins and email discussions to ensure you’re making progress with the edit and aren’t wandering into a rabbit hole. On submission of the final manuscript and revision letter, the instructor will provide a feedback letter (as described under Option A). Your edit must be complete within eight weeks of beginning the practicum. $750.

  • Option C. The instructor can supply an early draft of a published novel for you to practice on. The instructor will provide weekly check-ins and will evaluate your final edit and revision letter as described in Option A. (This is similar to the Advanced Developmental Editing for Fiction class I offer through the EFA, but can be taken at any time). Your edit must be complete within eight week of beginning the practicum. $350.
