Editing Short Stories and Novellas (Mar 13 – Apr 9, 2023)

$275. In this four-week, instructor-led class, students will learn the developmental editing of short fiction and novellas. We’ll discuss:

  • Basic expectations for the various types of short fiction, ranging from flash fiction up through novellas.
  • How DE differs when it is applied to short fiction and novellas as opposed to full-length novels.
  • Strategies for editing short fiction that seeks to capture a moment or an emotion instead of the connected narrative we look for in full-length fiction.
  • The increased importance of line editing in short fiction – and how to use it wisely.
  • Audience expectations of short fiction and novellas, including but not limited to genre considerations.
  • The demands, challenges, and rewards of editing literary publications
  • . . . and more!

Each week, you’ll complete a homework assignment and receive personal feedback on it from the instructor. We’ll focus on one 15,000-word novella manuscript in the homework assignments, but examples of other short fiction will be included in the lessons. Discussions will be held in the forums, asynchronously so that you do not have to be in a particular place at a particular time.
