Description

$80 (Members: $72) | How to effectively use point-of-view and perspective in fiction | 4 lessons | Self-paced

This class goes beyond the basics of head-hopping to dive deep into problems in perspective and POV. It covers:

  • the possibilities and limits of various narrative points-of-view
  • describes how other developmental problems are related to POV, such as character development
  • goes past simple distinctions such as first versus third to dive into close third versus omniscient third versus limited third versus multiple third

The course also takes a look at some odd birds, like second person, objective narrators, and unreliable narrators, dissecting how they work, when they work, and how to fix them when they don’t. All of this is discussed with an eye towards spotting POV and perspective problems in your own work.

Lesson assignments are paired with answer keys to help you understand the material.

The class is entirely online and asynchronous (you don’t have to be in any particular place at any particular time to participate).
