$30 (Members: $27) | How to finish your novel | 8 lessons | Self-paced

I like to call this the What-Comes-After-NaNoWriMo Class. You’ve got a project that you may have made a good start on but it needs work. And you just can’t seem to get it finished.

Maybe it isn’t a novel; maybe it’s a memoir or a narrative nonfiction project you’re working on, or a series of short stories you’ve been trying to put together for a while, or anything creative that doesn’t immediately return your investment on it (because you’d be a lot more likely to finish it if someone were waiting to hand over twenty grand for it).

This class helps you establish an accountability practice and good writing habits over the course of eight weeks so that even if your project doesn’t get finished in that time, you’ll have the tools to continue working in an effective and productive way.

The course covers the four causes of resistance that I’ve identified over the years as reasons people get stalled on big projects:

  1. productivity-related challenges (trying to find the time and space)
  2. craft-related (you don’t know how to do the next thing, like unsnarl a plot snag)
  3. negative-thinking related (“why should I bother when no one will read this anyway?”)
  4. motivation-related (without a boss standing over your shoulder, other projects can take priority)

These reasons are often connected to each other: if you doubt anyone will read your work (3) it’s really hard to set aside time to do it (1).

This class helps you identify these roadblocks to your success and develop habits that will help you now and in the future.

If you’re a member of Club Ed, you can use the Accountability Group to help maintain your progress in this class.

The class is entirely online and asynchronous (you don’t have to be in any particular place at any particular time to participate).
