Starting Your Editing Business

$90 (Members: $81) | How to start your editing business | 4 lessons | Self-paced | Intermediate

This class helps new editors start and grow their editing business, whether copyediting, developmental editing, coaching, or some combination.

Each lesson includes information on topics such as:

  • finding your purpose
  • identifying your potential clients
  • conducting a personal skills inventory
  • gaining more experience
  • setting fees
  • using letters of introduction
  • managing clients
  • avoiding scope creep
  • creating project quotes
  • assessing manuscripts
  • understanding marketing basics

At the conclusion of the class, you will have written a letter of introduction to be used with prospective clients, a project quote template you can use to make bids, and a basic marketing plan you can use to guide your next steps.

The course also includes an “Additional Information” document, meant to supplement the material in the lessons. It is designed to help answer nitty-gritty questions associated with starting a freelance editing business, such as types of business structures you can use and logistical considerations.

The class is entirely online and asynchronous (you don’t have to be in any particular place at any particular time to participate).
