Beginning Line Editing for Fiction (Oct 28 – Nov 24, 2024)
$300.00
Description
$300 (Members: $270) | How to line edit | 4 weeks | Instructor-led | Beginner
This class introduces you to the main concepts of line editing, which is sentence-level editing intended to help polish an author’s prose.
Line editing is in very high demand among indie authors, so it’s an excellent skill to learn.
But be warned: This is not big-picture editing, although it can be used to help solve some big-picture problems like info-dumping. We’ll be looking at how even the tiniest tweak of wording can change the impact of a sentence.
This is a class about exploring how the use of effective, evocative language can support storytelling; it is not a class about where the commas go. (That’s Beginning Copyediting for Fiction.)
We’ll talk about:
- the differences between copyediting and line editing
- how to help an author polish their prose without taking over their voice
- how different genres require different approaches
- how to combine line editing with other services, such as copyediting and developmental editing to provide more value to your clients.
- and more!
You’ll get plenty of practice in line editing during the weekly assignments.
Each week includes a new lesson and a new assignment to be submitted for the instructor’s feedback along with online discussions about developmental issues.
The class is entirely online and asynchronous (you don’t have to be in any particular place at any particular time to participate) but weekly assignments are due by specific deadlines.
