This class walks you through the principles of developmentally editing the related genres of mystery, suspense, and thriller. It covers:

  • Understanding genre conventions
  • Helping authors create a strong central conflict
  • Keys to building tension and suspense
  • Common problems in crime fiction
  • Character development in crime fiction
  • Basics of perspective and point-of-view in crime fiction
  • Common missteps authors make in writing crime fiction
  • Editing a crime notel in a series

The course includes the full ms of a thriller that you can practice on, along the fully edited manuscript (and revision letter) that you can review to see how one editor approached the project.

Intermediate classes are intended for those with some developmental editing experience or who have taken the Beginning + Intermediate DE for Fiction classes or the self-paced DE 1 through 6 classes.

The class is entirely online and asynchronous (you don’t have to be in any particular place at any particular time to participate).
