Don’t feel overwhelmed by “competition”

As freelancers, we have a tendency to think that we’re in competition with all other editors and (especially if you’re active on social media and see how many other editors there are in the world) that can feel overwhelming.

But we’re actually not in competition with everyone else who calls themselves an editor.

Case in point: I’m also not the person you want to choose to edit your horror novel (I don’t edit horror).

I do most of my editing for publishers, not indie author clients, and I typically don’t work with beginners.

So if you do edit horror, or you edit primarily for indie author clients, or you do work with beginners, I’m not your competition.

The more you can focus on the specifics of what you offer, the more you set yourself apart from the generic field of “editors.”

“I edit horror for beginning indie authors!” is like my Kryptonite but if that sounds like you, there’s a whole bunch of authors who are looking for that exact combination of skills – and not that many editors who have them.
